Coronation Street’s Tony Maudsley jokes writers ‘hate’ him as character’s age revealed

Coronation Street’s Tony Maudsley has received a wave of support from his fellow cast members after revealing the age of his character, George Shuttleworth.
Tony, 57, made his debut on the cobbles as George in 2020, with the character soon unveiled as the son of local undertaker Archie Shuttleworth (Roy Hudd).
After his father’s passing, George took the reins of Shuttleworth’s Independent Funeral Directors on Tile Street, bringing in his mate Todd Grimshaw (Gather Pierce) as his right-hand man.
In 2022, George’s family grew with the arrival of his sister Glenda, portrayed by Jodie Prenger, on the soap. The former cruise ship entertainer quickly won over viewers with her close bond with her doting brother.

During Monday’s episode of the ITV soap (December 29), Glenda was seen gearing up for her birthday bash at the Bistro, which falls just a few weeks before George’s 60th, reports the Daily Star.
As the celebration got underway, it became apparent that the main focus of the event was George’s early party to commemorate his milestone, rather than his younger sister’s birthday.
After the episode aired, Tony took to Instagram to jest about looking too youthful to portray a 60-year-old character, sharing a charming selfie with his co-star Jodie Prenger, who is 46 in real life.
