Her partner John Dixon shared the sad news on Facebook, writing: “The love of my life passed away early this morning 46 years, and now my heart is broken. To the green fields beyond.”

Lorraine was well known for her character of Fleur Budgen from 2007 to 2012 in the school-based drama Waterloo Road. She also played the role of Sue Benson in the Sky sitcom Trollied and appeared with Reece in the BBC drama series Moving On.

Actor Reece, 66, who starred as Joe McIntyre on the cobbles from 2008 until his character was killed off in 2010, paid tribute to the actress. He wrote: “Lorraine Cheshire. @chesloza Such a kind soul and talented actor. So sad. May you rest in peace, Lorraine. xxx.”
